      1. CNC O

You gave me a headache dude

      2. Random Stuff

Electric cars are simple why are you making it sound so complicated when its not. If you ever own a hobby grade Radio control car then basically you have all you need to know unless your spreed control is not working then all you have to do is replace it i doubt very highly mechanics like you and me will not be replacing chips or processors in fact the whole speed control will get replaced. Some Old school mechanics fear the EV cars but i understand them perfectly and they are far less complicated the an internal combustion engine.

      3. david white

in this video were you also directing traffic

      4. Chris D.

@Mark Plott mine goes 260 miles per charge. Winter climate kills range.

      5. Chris D.

@Cecilia Age of Aquarius you spelled conquered wrong

    2. Javlonbek Ergashev

Who is here to see his shaking hands?

    3. Kevin S

Yes, the serial hybrid, like the BMW, gives you the range without the complexity of the dual drive train in the parallel hybrid.

    4. IOn Vash

The Tesla motors are brushless DC motors its basically a 3 polled motor controlled by pulse width modulation of high voltage DC. The higher the frequency the faster it turns, way different than an AC motor

    5. Maria Veiga

The diesel locomotive was invented and put to use along time ago.... imagine the fuel milage we would be getting if passenger vehicles would have been built the same way.... not a 350 v8 hybrid but a 1000cc diesel powered ac to DC propulsion.... if it wasn't feasible trains wouldn't work

    6. joe toronto

Short story is Toronto to Quebec is some 10 hours drive with a gas engine in the winter With an electric car I would have to sleep somewhere because the to frequent time to recharge and the tie consuming of the operation It would end up more expensive on the long run

    7. Shaun

I'm curious if Scotty has actually ever owned a Tesla.

    8. Denshi-Oji

The only Prius "transmission" I am aware of is an Electric transmission. IT IS NOT a CVT! It uses Electric motors, plus the conventional Engine, and depending on the speed and charge, it runs the Engine and/or the Electric Motors at various speeds, and even directions (on the Electric Motors) to produce motion of the vehicle. It does have the advantages a CVT has in being fully adjustable to optimize for torque and power, but the comparison ends there.

    9. anyons5

The comparison between jump starting an electric car and an ICE car is a false equivalency. Jump starting a car provides energy to engage the mechanical process for combustion. Charging the car provides "fuel" for the vehicle's propulsion. A better comparison would be comparing an electric car out of battery charge and a ICE car out of gasoline. You can tap into almost any source of electricity to charge the car (including the sun), but you can't get gasoline from sunshine; You have to get it for a gas station.

    10. anyons5

Scotty, i usually like you're insights into long-term failure and mechanical processes that a repair mechanics sees on an ICE car, but in this case you are not well informed. Modern electric cars operate nothing like a toy RC car. You failed to mention the key component, the the Power electronics module or power inverter. Transformers are not key primary components of the AC or DC drivetrain. Transformers don't generate multi-phase AC wave. They step one voltage down to another voltage or vice versa at a fixed ratio. That is done with an array cascading power transistors. You're logic of DC motor's torque decay does hold water with modern power electronics. Torque this only limited by the available power from the battery . As the shaft speed increases, the rotational torque will drop off proportionally. Range doesn't reduce in cold weather because a loss of efficiency; range is lost because the chemical reaction slows down when the temperature drops. This is an entirely new way of propulsion, it's worth understanding it first before forming an opinion on its shortcomings.

    11. Ron Evans

Hey Scotty, good video. I wonder how all electric holds up in really hot climates too since batteries don't like extreme heat

    12. Vadim Romanovich

Used electric Smart Fortwo is a bargain and with short commute, its perfect.

    13. saulns

Um, Tesla’s curb weight is higher than most hyrids. Don’t take my word check Wikipedia

    14. mark oldendorf

Giving away one of those in this video too?

    15. Jim Gagne

If you wanted a turd mobile ...And he shows a fiat..HAhahahaha !

    16. MrGrummpy

I was really hoping to get more information about the Cybertruck. I am disappointed.

    17. NORBIE MONDERIN

Scotty resembles how windmills generate power by moving his hands too much.

    18. kjetiloo

Norway is the land of EVs. Nuff said.

    19. kiyosen L.

Id have to disagree on the difficulty of working on an electric car, they are quite easy to work on, you do have to take proper saftey precautions before doing certain tasks however the same is true of a normal car, the main reason most people dont think they are easy is because they believe tech is more complicated than it is, and also cause tesla doesn't like you fixing your own car cause they suck so they try to avoid you being able to get your own parts

    20. Captn 0bv10us

One last thing even tho the tesla doesnt have a engine only a motor it weighs more than a petrol vehicle of the same size

    21. Captn 0bv10us

Scotty a transformer is used to transfer energy from one circuit to 1 or more circuits what you meant was a “inverter” which takes direct current (dc) and converts it to alternating current (ac) and a “rectifier” changes (ac) to(dc)

    22. Mike B

Scotty doesn't seem to know that all electric cars (except the Nissan Leaf) have active thermal management for the battery packs so while you're at home sleeping and the car is plugged in overnight to charge it's actually using some energy from the house to keep the pack nice and warm too. As a Canadian in the great white north here who's been driving an electric car for the past three years every day - yes even in the winter! - the hands-down best features of an electric car is pre-heating while plugged-in and the instant heat. Not only do I not have to wait for a big gas engine to warm up before I get some heat in the cabin but I don't have to scrape my windshield in the morning anymore either! Electric cars have instant heat and while you do sacrifice some range in the winter it's not as bad as he makes it out to seem (unless you have a Leaf), plus if you schedule your car with when you usually leave in the morning it will get itself all nice and warm and defrosted - all without polluting. So with an EV you wake up every day with a full 'tank' of electrons (which is now about as much range as you get in a typical gas car), you don't have to scrape in the morning, you get instant heat, less maintenance since there's no oil to change, or timing belts, or exhaust system or the thousand other engine things that can break, and you don't have to spend time outside freezing while you fill it up with gas since you never have to go to a gas station again or concern yourself with gas prices. Electric cars in the winter are actually WAY BETTER than gas cars. And pretty much all of the country has access to the miracle of electricity (which is always cheaper than gas!) so if you run out it's not the end of the world because literally any plug can be a 'fuel' source although most normal people realize they're running low and find a charger well before that. And chargers are friggin' everywhere but unless you drive an EV you probably wouldn't notice them.

    23. Richard Alexander

2nd Gen Chevy Volt has a good electric range, and still gets good mileage on gas for extended trips. Shame on Chevrolet for giving up on them.

    24. Christopher King

The arm motions are super strong in this one. Wonder if he can talk without his arms

    25. tabaccopuro

Scotty, this particular video makes me want to buy a horse. Geeezzz.... By the way, the Tesla Cybertruck will have "a solar panel" option according to Elon. A supplimental kind of setup. Do you have any videos on the upcoming 2020 Ford Mach-E Mustang (electric)?

    26. Craig Holmlund

You don't get something for nothing. For example, if a 20 hp engine will not adequately propel a vehicle at 60 mph, then neither will a 20 hp engine attached to a generator be able to generate enough electrical energy to adequately propel that vehicle at 60 mph. So with that being said, how much energy does that motorcycle engine produce?

    27. Rolando Crisostomo

      Turdmobile 😁😅😅 3:24

    28. Craig Holmlund

What is wrong with running a DC motor through a transmission?

    29. De Sign

Toyota copies most of their "new tech" from other companies. Their Prius was taken from Honda's insight, and they also copied Honda's Hydrogen Fuel Cell program. They have ZERO creativity. Toyota's new cars are just Subarus and BMW's with toyota badges. Some great products, but Toyota is a crap brand.

    30. Geass Sogeki

pretty flawed perspective, these are the people that spread the misunderstanding about EVs.

    33. J Armellin

TIL stuff from this BUT What does this have to do with the Cybertruck?!?

    34. kman 4443

Scotty, are you a plug electric mechanic? You have a lot of energy for a 66 yr old. LOL

    35. kman 4443

AC, DC, Hybrid, enough already!!! Buy a diesel truck!

    36. jron20 r

wow your garage looks like a bomb went off, makes mine look neat....to hell with neat....

    37. Michael Todd

Scotty: " This stuff is so complicated" Elon: " My rockets come back from space and land themselves" Scotty: " Im a mechanic so...." Elon: " you're a mechanic, so...."

    38. DownLow Performance Inc

      not a clue.

    39. Oliver Pereira

You're forgetting something study Tesla's have battery heaters

    40. Tyler Garrison

Hey Scotty, check out solid state batteries, specifically John B Goodenough and his advancements with the technology. Going to be game changer for EVs

    41. Rob Fruth

So the traction motor in a EV IS AC ?

    42. El Blaise

To each his own but I just want my electric truck to look like normal truck and not Playstation polygons.

    43. foo bar

of course i can jump start an electric car. i can hook up a diesel-generator, bicycle, solar panel etc.

    46. behrooz735

Mr. Kilmar the A/C and D/C motors you know is long gone at least for high tech machines. So none of what you said it true, however we still really love you! The only bad thing about e-cars is the time needed to charge. Take a look at Nicolas trucks and you see the power of electricity!

    47. Tom Maika

You lost me at 3:00 of this video......

    48. Mau Librado

I didn't know Scotty was from Texas

    49. Ron Schlorff

This is this guy's day job! His night job is as a symphony conductor!!

    50. Kevin W

gas must be cheaper in Texas

    51. James Burkart

I don't think they're using big heavy transformers to convert DC to AC. Inverters switch at high frequencies and are surprisingly lightweight for the amount of power they can supply

    52. Marco Kropp

Isn't the Tesla's cars design so robust, you'll not going to need a jump start.... also, there is Uber and rentals if the car fails :) -this is not mad max times :P

    53. Joshua Mcpeek

I think an indirect drive diesel electric car would be good, the engine would generate dc current with a large alternator and one gearset with no transmission, the engine would charge a small dc battery which then would be used the power electric motors, air conditioning, heat, and and other accessories.

    54. Toshisan Motonaka

Tesla still is the best overall

    55. Janis Kondratjevs

Electric cars are dangerous to work on. Tell that to Rich Rebuilds :D

    56. iirossii2005

Mute it and you have geriatric YMCA .

    57. Samuel Thompson

There are startup companies setting up fleets of rapid charge capable trucks that would rescue an electric car with a flat battery pack. Mobile Superchargers.

    58. Cory Wilson

I believe and know that with the advancements, in tech year to year being compounded consistently and adapted in a shorter timespan, certain problems regarding all electric cars will fade... Temp, Range, Increased Functional adaptions, it's going to take over and stick exponentially. Newer generation, newer innovations, more products relevant to the times will appear. Thus The Reality of History.

    59. videodrom1

Dude, cut down on that meds.

    60. Byen I Skyen

brushless electric motor is basically a reverse alternator that uses power instead of generating and if u reverse polarity u get engine brake and generate power

    61. yootoober2009

That hybrid diagram tells me it's a poor electric and a poor ICE car. When that battery pack dies I probably would not replace it and just go gas full time. The hybrid also loses the trunk and the frunk.

    62. Mario Galeana

Gotta question for you... what do you think about the dodge/Chrysler pentastar engine?

    63. Ethical Mind

the cold weather thing is accurate, i have a tesla in northern illinois. when it gets cold, my 60 mile commute drains about 95-110 miles, depending on how cold it is. but if i park it in my heated garage overnight, it only uses 65-70 miles for that same commute.

    67. Gotta Elk

I bet if you tie his hands he can't talk

    69. - MAX -

      Scotty is scare of electricity.

    70. Paul Standaert

I can't get over the fact that never in my life have I seen *ANY* kind of battery in *ANY* device at *ANY* time of my life that was 10 years old and still strong. With the average age of automobiles on US highways today being 12 years and the big batteries for the electric car is $15,000+, what do you think is going to happen?
